A brief look at the NFC

![]()
The Norwegian Forest Cat originated as a natural outdoor working cat, on Scandinavian farms, and its powerful build and skill as a climber and hunter reflect this heritage. Whether it goes as far back as the Vikings - who describe a "fairy cat" in their legends - is unknown.
Although it is a big, strong-legged animal, the Norwegian Forest Cat has a certain elegance.
Their head is triangular with a long, straight profile, and ears are pointed, open and erect. The eyes are large, slightly obliquely set.
Their tail should be long and bushy and at least reach to the shoulder blades.
The Norwegian Forest Cat is one of the Semi-Longhaired cat varieties.
Its double layered coat is heavier in the winter and keeps out both cold and wet.
These cats mature slowly and may not reach full stature until four years of age.
They are a very alert, active, and loving animal, that make a very good companion.
The Norwegians are very playful and love to climb.
They are also quite attracted to water and would think nothing of balancing on the edge of the bath whilst you are in it, and fish for the soap.
Even though the Norwegian Forest Cat is a large and energetic breed, they are quite happy to live indoors. Just ensure that they have ample climbing platforms and toys to keep them occupied.
